Monday Music

Here is a piece called Untitled Rumba. And yes, it might sound familiar to you as an old version of it can be found in the ListeningLounge. However, Jon and I worked on it recently (((for a compilation CD))) and this here is the result:

You can download the high quality 320 kbps mp3 version here.

I wrote the music in 2003 or 2004 and recorded the guitars during the La Semana sessions. Last year Jon added new bass and synth parts and I re-mixed the whole thing. Perfect for a Monday Morning, isn’t it!!

You can download a few computer desktops/wallpapers containing the characters for “Bicycle” on Flickr. I kept the wallpaper dark in order not to be too distracting. A gift from Ochazuke and me.

Falco Pruners + Istanbul

This was my post from Istanbul on September 10th, 1997 – you can read other entries by selecting dates on this page.

TOUR REPORT
Sunday I am trimming some small branches on a Juniper tree with my new Falco pruners, when I slice into my left index finger. The wound starts bleeding pretty bad. I use Neosporin and wrap a band-aid around the cut. Monday morning I get up at 4:30am to get ready to drive to Albuquerque. At 8am our flight leaves Albuquerque. We have to make stops in Colorado Springs and again in Cincinnati before we land in New York, where we board a flight to Istanbul.

Istanbul is smoggy when we arrive on Tuesday Morning. My finger has stopped bleeding and is healing, but when I use it to dial the telephone a sharp pain runs through it. Bondo has promised me some strong Canadian pain killers for the show tomorrow night. I figure, that if I spread Crazy Glue over the cut, to keep it shut, and use painkillers, I should be able to perform somewhat. I won’t have practised since Saturday….

Power

At last the sky above Santa Fe is dark and devoid of light-pollution. The annoying lights so many people have surrounded their houses with are out…

I want to go into the studio to continue practicing guitar, since there is no electricity to record as I had planned, but I can’t even get into the studio because I can’t open the magnetic lock (very Batman!) of the main door without electricity…

Somebody from Comcast just called me and asked whether Santa Fe has electricity. No, we most certainly do not… Maybe there is a bathroom stall at Comcast HQ with the following words: If there seems to be trouble in Santa Fe, be sure to call Ottmar Liebert – he will tell us truthfully whether the power is out.

And, is it possible, more snow…

Luckily I have my little LED headlamp and so I will sit down in a comfy chair and read in a book of Hafiz poems, “The Gift”.

Here is one of his poems:

Good
Poetry
Makes the universe admit a
Secret:
“I am
Really just a tambourine,
Grab hold,
Play me
Against your warm
Thigh.”

Wikipedia on Sufi-master Hafez or Hafiz (ca. 1320-1389)

Or, maybe the book will wait and I will take the guitar I keep in my house and play it…

Later – now it is starting to get a little chilly to play guitar, but I am soldering on with a thick sweater. This reminds me of living in my first loft in Boston. Since it was a commercial building, the heat was turned off at 5PM on Friday and came back on early Monday morning. One had to have a friend with a heated apartment or stay in bed under a thick comforter with a good book… :)

An hour later the power returns. This is a long exposure and the vertical lines are the snow flakes.

It’s Saturday Night…

…I guess that makes it alright.
Gave a friend the login to download some early and very unfinished mixes for the new album…

Superb sound… the spacial depth, the mix, the way it all sits. I’m still listening, although my sense is you’ve hit a new plateau, amigo. This could be major.

More later… and good luck tomorrow night!

Ah, almost forgot… the Grammys are tomorrow. I am cooking dinner for friends in the evening and do not have a TV anyway. I will find out about it on Monday morning.
