Shinto shrine at Ise

This Shinto shrine at Ise named Jingu Shrine is rebuilt every twenty years. Its first incarnation was in 04 C.E. This type of design, which utilises ephemeral materials while capitalizing on the human element, is a great inspiration for The Long Now Foundation. This object has done something which Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids have not; it aided the survival of its institution.

Friends of the High Line

Four teams have been selected to create a master plan for the High Line. One will be selected in Fall 2004 to begin designing New York’s most exciting new public open space. These aren’t final plans; they’re illustrations of each teams proposed approach. The master plan itself will be developed by the selected team starting this fall, with many opportunities for you and the community to play a role.

Friends of the High Line (FHL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and reuse of the High Line, a 1.5-mile-long historic elevated rail structure on the West Side of Manhattan.

Looks like a very exciting opportunity.

Tower Records – La Semana

“Ottmar Liebert brings to bear a number of traditions on this recording, most notably the time-honored music of Spain. Drawing heavily from flamenco, Liebert creates a body of music that is at once forward-looking yet deeply rooted in the Spanish heritage.

LA SEMANA is made up of many elegant compositions and all of them feature the guitar. ‘Cocteau’ is a brooding modal work that invokes the ethos of Spain the best. A pair of guitars dominates this mix; one guitar plays a passionate and dissonant melody while the other coolly provides a static harmony. Overall, the two guitars create wonderful tension and release as Liebert’s composition gently unfolds. Another tune, ‘Echoes of a Caress’ combines Flamenco with an overtly synthetic keyboard trumpet and percussion section. What makes this track so creative is that Liebert does not attempt to fool the listener, but rather, he highlights the disparity between the organic guitar and the digital accompaniment. It is this kind of musical judgment that sets Liebert and his band, Luna Negra, apart from many of his contemporaries. Here technology is used to further the art, not to obscure it.”

I believe this review is from the MUZE service. Nontheless – I think they “got it”.

Leda Battisti

Leda’s newest recording, on which I played guitar in April of 2002, is still not available. She told me this week that she is hoping to find a solution to her problems with the record company soon. She also promised that we can offer one of the tracks in our Listening Lounge when the album is officially finished.

Carmen

Here is a link to the third film in Carlos Saura’s famous trilogy of Flamenco movies with dancer Antonio Gades. I already mentioned El Amor Brujo and Bodas de sangre a few days ago.

Carmen is inspired by Georges Bizet’s opera. It received the award for the best artistic contribution at the Cannes Festival, and was nominated for the Oscar in 1984. The guitar players are Paco de Lucia, playing a Lester DeVoe Negra, and Tomatito.
