Queen of the Night

I was visiting friends when I noticed this cactus in their neighborhood, wrapped around a tree. It blooms only at night and each blossom only blooms once. Spectacular.

It’s shape puts me in mind of the fabulous aria sung by the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute.

That is a beautiful photo. We have a broad-leafed cactus which similarly blooms at night and the flowers whither in the morning. Now I am inspired to post a picture of it taken just a couple weeks ago.
