Wednesday Rehearsal

Got up at 5:30. After a cup of coffee I scrambled up the ladder to the roof and set up the camera on a tripod to shoot the setting of the moon and the morning light. Then I went back inside as it was freezing cold and sat zazen for 40 minutes, which was delicious. I usually sit in the evening, and it was nice to sit while the light was slowly turned up outside.

Unfortunately the camera’s battery died after only 43 captures, as you can see in the earlier post.

In the kitchen I opened my laptop and found this poem in a message from a friend :

Unfettered at last, a traveling monk,
I pass the old Zen barrier.
Mine is a traceless stream-and-cloud life,
Of these mountains, which shall be my home?

– Manan (1591-1654)

Thank you IM.

Started working with Michael today. Met at Jon’s studio for a rehearsal in the afternoon to get a head start on rehearsing for the tour at the end of March. Haven’t played with a drumkit since 2001, but it felt really nice. Here is a first run through of La Luna. It has a nice feel! I have a few changes I want to make and once Stevo and Rusty add their parts to that… ah!!

You can download a 320kbps version HERE.
That was recorded with just three mics, one on the guitars and two on the drum kit.

I spent the evening with friends in Tesuque.

This has a really nice groove, and an overall great vibe to it. (whoops .. showing my age)

We like the way it sounds, too! This morning Jon and I talked about recording some of the upcoming rehearsals, exclusively for the Ottmar-Friends subscribers naturally. :-)

What an excellent idea Ottmar. This really took me back to my school days and playing in the studio… Thanks for sharing it with us!

I love listening to rehearsals. I still have cassettes of my own stuff from 20 years ago.
The syncopated kick drum is great. More exclusives please!
I’m going to enjoy this on my main system.

With the world becoming increasingly complex and unnatural, and music overly processed, I must say I enjoyed every moment of this magnificent expression of healthy music. Thank you Ottmar! Can I have seconds.. please?

    yum!

Thanks Kaz. Can’t get any simpler than playing live into three microphones (the bass was plugged in directly) right?! A lot of people don’t get that the sound has to first be produced by the musicians, and when they get a nice sound out of their instruments the rest can follow. I think Michael has a great touch on the drums! Anyway, yes, there will be seconds and thirds. That’s the whole point of the Ottmar-Friends Subscription. :-)

Loving it! A little bit like having some great musicians playing right here in the living room.
