Men to Boys

Last week I read an article on Wired News regarding the under-representation of women in high-tech business. It said that girls represent only 17 percent of Computer Science AP test takers, and women make up only 20 percent of information-technology professionals.

Is that because most computer games are written by men for boys and feature lots of killing and not a lot of intelligent interaction with the characters?

Is it because computer programmers are so often wrongly represented in the media as being nerds who have no social skills?

I have mentioned before that I felt that the computer was designed by and for males, and that input from ALL humans was needed to shape the computer into a better tool for mankind. Well, let’s hope that teachers across the country can turn girls onto the creative side of computers and we can all benefit from the improvements that they might someday bring about.
