Here are a few photos I took near my studio yesterday. Still plenty of snow:

But it’s melting:

Can you tell me what this is and why it is a very important element of a recording studio?

Humidifier or dehumdifier. Humiditity effects musical instruments.

It looks like two condensate lines coming down the brick wall.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that this is a multifunction device. It’s probably not only an isolation transformer, but may also be a unit that provides power conditioning as well as (possibly) transient protection.

Curious that it seems to on a (metal?) plate which is in sand. I might be missing something. That’s an interesting aspect of the installation.

Reason? To isolate from the energy company. The energy company may or may not provide “clean” power. They may or may not provide consistent amplitude power, and finally, they may or may not provide glitch-free power. Even if they do provide all those things 99% of the time, you don’t need the one glitch that makes it on to your little part of the grid to couple into the latest take of _____.

Isolation transformers … um … isolate the facility from variable conditions … most of the time.

A special chair for the musician who is unable to keep time with the others?

You are correct Steve, it is an isolation transformer. The transformer stands on a piece of slate on sand. The sand is contained within a box by plastic bags. More tomorrow.
