Nine Inch Nails Releases Free Album In High Definition Audio [Totally Free]
Nine Inch Nails’ latest album—The Slip—is 100% free, no payment required in any case, not even when you download the whooping 1.2GB version—which includes high definition WAVE 24/96 files (better-than-CD-quality 24bit 96kHz audio.) You can also choose from high-quality MP3s, FLAC lossless and M4A lossless. Note to record labels: drop dead.

Yeah, might work for an act that can fill large venues… he’ll make the money on ticket sales and merchandise. Won’t work for the rest of us and I am sick of hearing this: Note to record labels: drop dead. That is ignorant and stupid.

    Well, no … There is NO WAY it can work for all but the top tier of artists. Most simply don’t enjoy the economies of scale that acts like NIN do.

    However, FOR ACTS AT THAT LEVEL, this release completely resets the bar, so to speak…

    I was under the impression that the labels are essentially middle-men who are growing more and more unnecessary as CD stores make way to online sales, and the LL seems to be evidence of that. Do they still play an important role? I’m curious.

    Adam: thinking of record labels as middle-men is an overly simplistic view that simply doesn’t work. Myself, I care less about the record labels than I care about musicians and a huge act giving away music does not help the situation that most musicians find themselves in. How can a new band give away music when the studio costs money, the engineer costs money, studio-musicians cost money, the designer who does the artwork costs money etc.

    I don’t have the time to go into it, but have written about it in this Diary many times and I highly recommend following the link at the end of my above post.

    That’s a good article. I agree. I’m tired of the thought that CDs are business cards and that a record label is being cutting edge with their marketing by giving CDs away. I know some artists that put years and years of work into one CD
    not to mention all of the production costs. The majority of the fans that enjoy and appreciate the music will buy the CD and expect to buy the CD.
