Even now,
decades after,
I wash my face with cold water –Not for discipline,
nor memory,
nor the icy, awakening slap, but to practice
choosing
to make the unwanted wanted.– Jane Hirschfield, “A Cedary Fragrance”

excellent!!
Beautiful poem. It’s difficult to put into words, but I think that after frequent exposure to what once was unwanted we do it not out of obligation, or because it’s somehow uplifting, or in hopes that it goes away, but because we accept it just for what it is.
