Perspective tied to culture, researcher says
By devising a simple board game, which players viewed from opposite angles, psychologist Boaz Keysar of the University of Chicago found that Chinese players could instinctively imagine what their partner was seeing, whereas Americans “often completely failed to take the perspective of their partner.”

Can one develop compassion without taking the perspective of others?
Thanks Y.

is it possible to pity or sympathise with someone without actually thinking within their mental framework?it is funny that americans could be categorised as unable to empathize with their counterparts, because i think that Americas war in iraq is a good example for this line of thinking. Americas war in iraq to the firm believer appears to be a sympathetic mission, to bring democracy to iraq? sounds great right….however, this is all based on the assumptions of western philosophical notions not eastern islamic notions, did america want to help…maybe in a way, is it a compassionate nation?……on the whole yes, it wants to help the world but does it take into account a perspective alien to its own…the answer is no

this is a hard question, and maybe i choose the wrong example….but basically i think that people can actively develop and practice compassion without think with perspective
