Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, or evil can become a source of beauty, joy and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.
– Henry Miller
I found the above quote in the Upaya newsletter. It reminds me of Kurosawa:
Being an artist means not having to avert one’s eyes.– Akira Kurosawa
I read somewhere that when they were little, Kurosawa’s brother advised him never to close his eyes when he was scared. I believe he said that staring at something unflinchingly took away the horror or fear.
Nice Miller quote, I think one could summarize “Don’t be ignorant, life is full of the good and the bad both serve a purpose”
perhaps there is some responsibility that goes along with keeping your eyes/mind open… some aren’t willing to go there, yet.
only when I have kept both eyes and mind open has the dark become less frightening and easier to explore
yea, compost stinks but look what comes out of that chaos
“Being an artist means not having to avert one’s eyes.”
Opens seeing/feeling everything to a new heightened level.
Socrates suggested that those who’s eyes and mind are the most open, are the closest to the consciousness of the gods (philosophers naturally) are the best candidates for leadership
