Alright… it started with your photos of Tibet and now after viewing Dustin’s I am totally blown away by both of your images…. is it really like that? The color – is it really that saturated? And the people’s joyous smiles – is that just for the camera or do they smile alot? Just amazing… Oh yea, I liked the audio files of the horses bells in your diary… I sat in my snowy Maine farmhouse last week and listened to the little bells around the necks of horses on the other side of the world – enchanting.

Yes, it is really like that. Maybe it is the lack of smog, maybe it is the thin air at altitude, but colors are very rich. And the people really smile like that.

I was not able to find in a search if you have previously commented on what type of camera(s) you use. Did you have any problems in the transition into the digital era, how ever many years ago?

First of all I love digital photography. When I went to artschool in the seventies I hated the darkroom, the chemicals, the smells, the way the developer felt on one’s hands… I would never want to go back to analog photography (or analog studio recording!). I use Canon cameras and while I love my EOS 20D, I find that the noisy SLR mechanism can be very distracting. To Tibet I took a Canon S70, which I used in RAW mode (the newer S80 does not support RAW mode!!!) and was able to charge from my Voltaic backpack. I also brought a SD700, which is very small and which I carry almost all of the time. No, I did not have a difficult transition into the digital era at all. My friend Greg Gorman (a famous L.A.-based photographer who shot the covers for Poets + Angels, Borracsa and The Santa Fe Sessions) used to tell me in the nineties that he would never switch to digital photography. Now he shoots all digital and loves it. He teaches digital photography world-wide, has been interviewed by NPR on digital photography and does Apple workshops… So, yes, even if you have 30 or more years invested in film-photography, once you make the switch to digital you most likely will love it!

I am looking to fill my camera void and there are so many choices. I have been inspired to take it up again. – laurie
