Psychiatrists have long debated the existence of Stendhal syndrome, a psychosomatic condition characterized by rapid heartbeat, dizziness and even hallucinations when an individual is exposed to an ‘overdose’ of beautiful art. It is named for the 19th-century novelist, an early sufferer.
