Peer Gynt

Peer Gynt performed by William Orbit as part of his “Pieces in a Modern Style” series. Why, you ask? Well, because Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt was featured in the movie Soylent Green and that movie took place in the year 2022. Listen to the London Symphony playing the same piece here. You may notice that the piece is written as a waltz but Orbit added a straight beat, which makes the melody cross over the bars, giving it an unsettling effect.

The movie “Soylent Green” appeared in 1973, and I was a wee lad of 12. I went to the theater with my dad to see the film. I have to confess, that as a 12 year old, I never could wrap my mind around the statement, “Soylent Green is people!” I remember thinking as a 12 year old, “What does that mean, Soylent Green is people? … how can that be? ” I guess as a 12 year old I just wasn’t getting the vibe of the film.

Still, my dad thought it would be a good idea if I saw it.

But I have been thinking about Soylent Green lately since the film takes place in 2022. In the movie the oceans are dying. Hmmm … not too far off from actual events.

Hahahahaha………….. This music is wild and wonderful, as if musicians on another planet are doing their interpretation! The Carmen was absolutely crazy. I Felt – wait a minute – totally in ORBIT!

    Thanks again, Dear Ottmar.
