In the past year 106,901 spam comments have been left on this diary. The daily ratio of spam to real comments is several hundred to one.
PS:
Anna comments:
Ottmar, don’t you scan everything that Word Press presumes as spam, just in case some of it is not?
My answer:
most certainly not. I will not scan 300-500 comments a day to see whether there are one or two that were incorrectly presumed to be spam. There are things to do, people and places to see…
To that I’ll add that, if a person has the feeling that their comments have been deleted together with the comment-spam, they might want to try using no links in their comment – it might also be wise not to use an email address like bigtool@whatever.com…
Wow! And you have to moderate them ALL? Insane. How you have time to get anything else done, I don’t know, but that’s impressive :)
dude that sucks. how much work is that for you to delete all that crap?
wow…that is bad……….must take alot of effort to sift through all the crap!! probably the reason for the comment mediator
Well, luckily WordPress has a fantastic plug-in that finds the spam. I don’t check it for errors and just delete everything it perceives to be spam….
so you don’t know that you won the lottery?

Well then I definitely want to leave you a real message and let you know how much I enjoy your blog. It’s been ages since I visited, and it was a delight to come back and read your recent posts. Especially Oct 25th’s entries. It was a gorgeous moon.

So many valuable resources are wasted each day on spam. To think that Ottmar’s gifts and skills are spent this way is sad, but I thank you, sir, for attending to the blog and enabling us to communicate.
As an aside, I checked our email filters and I was sent about 1,000 spam messages today. At least the technology has gotten quite good at discriminating, so the vast majority of them never got through.
Ottmar, I am offended! I have *never* used email address as you have suggested.
After your return from Nepal my comments were blocked. At that stage I was using Word Press log on.
Anna: you get offended easily. I amended my post to make it clear that I did not single you out. And I have not been to Nepal since 1978.
taria, unfortunately he also never hears about all those great deals on Adobe Photoshop he can get.
And now that I’ve used the words Adobe and Photoshop, presumably all my future comments will be marked as spam :)
