Headphones

“Noise is the most impertinent of all forms of interruption. It is not only an interruption but also a disruption of thought,” he (Arthur Schopenhauer) wrote. “Of course, where there is nothing to interrupt, noise will not be so particularly painful.”

Nice burn… “Of course, where there is nothing to interrupt, noise will not be so particularly painful.”

When it comes to the subject of eschewing headphones, “maybe we’re not more rude than ever,” M. Zachary Rosenthal, the director of the Center for Misophonia and Emotion Regulation at Duke University, said to the Times. “We just have new ways of being rude.”

Why is nobody using headphones in public anymore? | The Week

Perhaps it is actually very simple. It has become difficult to take noise seriously when everything around us makes so much noise… gas stations play ads and music and news right at the pump (another reason to go electric!)… supermarkets play music, some restaurants play music at such a volume that people have to speak loudly to have a conversation… etc.

I suspect this is at least a significant part of it. We just view each other differently. But I also think that there was a sea change after the 2016 election result. The social division really became quite prominent.

But I will say, I never abandoned my wired Bowers and Wilkens headphones (P5) because of the lack of an input jack. For me, I just added a bluetooth transmitter or an inline DAC. Those P5s are (now) nearly 15 years old (acquired in 2010) and for what I use them for, they are just fine.

I don’t think I’d ever not use headphones not least because the sound of music through that little speaker in the phone makes music sound like poorly modulated AM radio. Yuck. Probably most people don’t care about their music sounding good, or they don’t listen to music at all. It’s pretty easy to amplify and reproduce listenable speech like an audiobook or a podcast or Twitch stuff.

And I think from a generational perspective, I really cringe at being “that guy” Younger people might not give that aspect a second thought. I dunno. Students in my class(es) don’t seem to mind invading each other’s space with pre-recorded audio … even during class.

Ottmar – had to post this some where…

re the loudest noise i have ever heard.

    Today, …

(went for a swim in this fantastic huge pool by the lake)

(after the swim, decided to walk …city has done a good job re lake board walk).

So i am enjoying my walk when this huge jet flies over my head….it was BOOMING load …caught me by surprise – made me jump.

The air show is on this week end

    .super loud jets….
    It’s a scary sound …
They fly over my house ….sometimes, so close my window shakes.

At one point, 9 jets formed a tight diamond

and…they drew a big circle (made me think of you)
