Monday in Providence

Michael’s new drum kit (you can find a few photos here) was a big success last night in Buffalo. Jaren says it sounds great over the P.A. and we love he way it sounds in our monitors. I can hear my guitar better and felt I could play better because of that. The new setup also offers Michael many more unique colors. It really was fun to hear him play. We didn’t get a chance to rehearse with the new kit, because Michael had only three weeks since our return from Europe to research and order the new parts, and yesterday was actually the first time it was all put together.

We are in Providence, Rhode Island, for one of our two days off on his tour. My first time here, I think.

Yesterday the Berlin Philharmonic performed the Concierto de Aranjuez, by Joaquín Rodrigo, at the Teatro Madrid, with the soloist Cañizares. You can find a couple of videos on YouTube. I hope the Berlin Philharmonic will make an offical recording available.

Ottmar, thanks for info on the BP and Youtube, I totally agree with Panj and you.
That is definitely one of life’s truths- IT ALWAYS requires multiple visits to hardware stores on anything other than the most basic project. Now if they would just deliver…

Cañizares is an incredible guitarist. I’ve always liked Paco’s version of the Aranjuez better than many of the classical guitarists’ (great guitarists though they were). I think it’s supposed to have a Spanish attitude, a bite, which flamencos are just more likely to have. See here for a funny example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kskkS4g4hwI :) And Cañizares is a great flamenco so I’d love to hear his take on the Aranjuez. Can’t find it on YouTube yet, though.

Here are a couple of Cañizares videos for those who haven’t heard him before:
An unusual (and very beautiful) alegrías from his new album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQai9yw0uQM
Granaína (I’m a huge sucker for a good granaína): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXs4j5wpdHo

Sorry for double post, for some reason it was under moderation and I wanted to see if a second try would make it go through!

Thats a minimalist drumkit! I can’t figure out what the black drumhead is? Perhaps it’s the worlds’ thinnest piccolo snare:) Would love to hear it.

Adam: spam filter flagged your comments because of the amount of links, I guess.

Gerry: it’s a frame drum Michael uses instead of a tom-tom. With a microphone mounted close it sounds huge!
