The band rocked Friday night! Jon’s bass was fixed and he sounded great, really inventive and creative. We had some very fine moments and I believe Jaron captured it all. This is the strong suit of the trio, improvisation and creative exploration of the material.

Here are some photos from Thursday evening, when Jon and Matt discovered that the replacement potentiometer Lakland had sent for Jon’s bass, was different and the nut for the broken pot didn’t fit the new pot.

Tools of the trade:

The new t-shirt for men.

Michael suggested using a piece of a laminate to create a temporary nut that would hold the volume knob in place. It worked and actually looked pretty cool. Jon couldn’t use the knob that evening – he likes to use it instead of the foot pedal for swells – but it all held together.

I must wonder about Yoshi’s. I love playing there, but they had a DJ night in the other room, the sounds of which apparently spilled into the theater at times. I am told we got the DJ to turn down, but still, we had two sold out shows – why did they also do a DJ night, unless they really need the money? Here is hoping that Yoshi’s will be around for a long time!

Amen, Ottmar…may Yoshi’s live on and on…so many places have closed and Yoshi’s is a very nice place and it was very nice to make a special occasion out of your Concert and stay in SF, only a few blocks away and just walk to the venue on Thursday night and WOW WOW WOW!!!!!
We were very priveleged to sit right in front of you, Ottmar, and to watch your fingers moving over the strings was pure Magic…real Magic! I have never ever ever kept my eyes opened so much during a Concert nor could I imagine that such soft strokes could produce such immense and beautiful sounds! At some points, I felt quite embarrassed to be staring so much, I could just hear my Mother scolding me…:-)…but it was just too mesmerizing!!! I DID make grand efforts to tear my eyes away…but only being like 7 feet away…it was too tempting…:-)))
You 3 guys were all magnificant and filled the aire with so much Beauty and Magic…all around me, I heard breathe releasing sighs and felt people relaxing several notches…can’t do much better than that I think…:-)
THANK You so much, Ottmar, Jon and Michael…hope to catch you 3 again, soon!
…and please excuse the lateness of this Thank You note, but the wifi in our Hotel would not work, so I had to wait til I got home to my ‘real’ computer…:-)
    God Speed!!!

Panj: I mentioned that song on Tuesday. It does not have a title yet. The main melodies, what one might call the chorus, are based on the Arabic scale called Maqam Nakriz. The F is sharp and the B and E are flat: D, Eb, F#, G, A, Bb, C, D. We contrast that with a very American funk-section followed by a solo in Dm. The song has been getting a great response. I think we’ll need some real strings on this piece, when we record for the next album this Winter. Maybe a string quartet, like we used in 2005. At least that’s what I am envisioning now.
