Debussy! That’s who it was. I brought that quote up at lunch today with a friend, we couldn’t recall who’d said it. It came up when we were talking about rhythm – I posited that rhythm is important to music not so much because the notes come at regular intervals, but because the spaces between the notes are fundamentally related in a very orderly way (by factors of 2, etc.).
