It’s interesting how copyright has evolved over the centuries from a system that regulated the activities of book publishers and authors (not readers) after the printing press was invented to something that IMO is now impossible to enforce. I came across this article from a few years ago: http://web.mit.edu/comm-forum/forums/copyright.html . It’s mostly about software but also talks about musicians. Wouldn’t you know it, the speaker recommends a system like SSRI has where someone making a copy of the work is gently reminded to send a donation to the artist.

Thank you for treating your listeners with respect and not as would-be pirates. I have sent in donations when I’ve run out of your CDs to give to people and to make copies for others of mixes of SSRI artists’ songs. Everyone has loved the music, of course.
