For Apple laptop owners:
Coconut Battery
Scroll down the above web page and ownload the Beta widget if you are running Tiger – if you don’t you can get the regular version. Both are free.

My laptop battery is sucking and I just ordered a new one. According to the Coconut Battery Widget my old battery is on Load Cycle 652 and batteries have a lifetime of 300-500 loadcycles. In other words: no wonder!!

You can order a replacement battery by Newer Tech at OWC. Each new battery includes a label to return your old battery for proper recycling or disposal. They are also Mercury-free.

I tried using one of these on my PB17, and the battery never fit “just so.” As a result, my laptop kept cutting out, usually at very inconvenient times. I ended up having to send it back, and got one from the Apple store … which is a bummer because the OWC batteries are much better…

Thanks for the tip, Steve. Yes, that would suck! I’ll let you know how my replacement battery fits.

    Hi

Beware of OWC batteries – I am annoyed with them at the moment. I bought their longest life one 7200, which was fine for a year for occassional field use. I then thought my powerbook G3 would last over 14 hours with two (for field recording), so ordered a second. When I charged up the new one over several cycles I put them together and the first one stopped showing up – gone from full charge and OK performance to nothing. I had probably only put it through 10 charge cycles in a year as I have two other G4 powerbooks. Anyway sent it back to OWC and they said it was out of warranty – I am waiting to hear back from them as this is not my issue. So potentially spending $169 for a year of battery is less economical than some of the standard batteries that last much longer…Gary

    Hi,

OWC shipped me a bad battery, and of course they dont have more instock.

So…I asked for a refund –and they hit me with a 15% restocking fee. hmm! I had heard good things about OWC…

    Beware of OWC!

I have never had a bad experience with OWC and the replacement battery I ordered from them fits well and holds a charge well.
