Music: The Second Bagdad – Rahim AlHaj

When I arrived at GIG Saturday evening, I parked my car and noticed a man standing outside smoking. It looked like Rahim and I went up to him and introduced myself. We chatted for a while as people arrived for the performance. GIG is small and comfortable, a nice environment for an intimate performance. The sound was perfect and not over-amplified as is so often the case these days. Rahim introduced each piece of music with a little background story. All of the introductions were deeply moving and painted a very personal picture of Iraq. He played beautifully. Extra points for wearing the pin-striped suit!
Information was exchanged and plans were made to get together to see how my guitar and Rahim’s oud might sound together.

I hope this meeting comes true and gets recorded – at least in parts. Certainly an exciting blend. Am looking forward to a concert of you two in a tea house in Tunis or Casablanca as well! I’m off listening to Kayhan Kalhor, although he’s not playing an oud….
