Shark Fin Soup

Hong Kong Disney will feature shark fin soup despite environmental devastation

Despite the fact that millions of sharks are killed every year, by cutting off their fins and dropping the still-alive body back in the sea, leading to their inevitable extinction, Disney will have sharkfin soup on its menu in its new Hong Kong theme park.

Greenpeace and the Worldwide Fund for Nature asked Hong Kong Disneyland to take shark fin soup off the menu after the theme park announced last week the delicacy would be served at wedding banquets and other special events…

But Disney says that while it takes the environment very seriously, the company is equally sensitive to local cultures and the dish is a key part of Chinese banquets.

Nothig Disney does surprises me anymore. Here is a link to an article by the BBC. Here is an article on MSNBC that states:

Conservationists have long condemned the eating of shark fin because of overfishing and the brutal way in which it is harvested. Critics say many fisherman simply hack off the fins and throw the dying shark back into the sea

What a terrible waste. About as ridiculously stupid as shooting Buffalo from a train and leaving them to rot… Only it is happening today!

Sometimes though, in Asia, the fin soups are now more commonly made out of immitation meat – and most people cannot tell the difference.

I don’t understand. Why would they cut off the fin and throw the rest of the fish away? There’s much more to the shark that can be sold. I’ve heard this and other cruel stories before and I have trouble believing them because they just don’t make sense.

Hmmmm, well, I was in Disney World last week, and the only evil I noticed was that they charged exorbitant prices for each and every facet of existence, all in the name of “doing it for the children.” On the brighter side, I got to hug Mickey. Several times. This is just wrong, though, no doubt aboot it.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to find that Disney might use the imitation meat since most everything else they do is an imitation…

Fake or no fake, I’m sure that Disney is more interested in their bank accounts than they are about the environment.

I think the thing about throwing the rest of the shark away is fake. Sounds like propaganda.

Jorge, this is an Associated Press story. They are usually fairly accurate.

Some of these ridiculously stupid things are just so hard to believe. Yet they do happen, I know.

Unfortunately Jorge, greed causes people to do some pretty horrible things. They say that money is the root of all evil, but it isn’t. It’s greed.

Greed? They throw away money that can be made from the rest of the fish! Supply and demand.

I agree with you Jorge, they probably are throwing money away. But greed also causes people to shoot themselves in the foot. It doesn’t make any sense.
