Current Projects

I am currently working on three projects.

1. Holiday Album – I have a little over half of the album finished and have until May to finish the rest. Am wondering about the title again. Came up with a new list of titles under current consideration.

2. Up Close – follow-up CD to La Semana. I have one song written and loads of ideas. The concept and the palette has been established and the overall sound is in my head.

3. Yet untitled follow-up to In the Arms of Love. This will be something very different. I am thinking of doing a solo album using this portable recorder. I have started to research spaces where I would like to record. The kind of spaces I have in mind are: chapels or other buildings that have a great reverb or an interesting vibe, natural spaces such as caves that have interesting reverb/vibe. The idea is to travel, find a space, set up a microphone, and improvise a piece on my guitar. Audio postcards. Musical letters. Impressions. I would also do field recordings of any sounds that captivate me and then edit everything together in my studio.

Possible titles: Moments in Time (from the scene in the movie Blade Runner, when the last replicant is dying. His last words are: All those Moments… will be lost… in time… like tears in rain.)
Tears in the Rain would be more poetic.

I know, I am trying to capture a fleeting moment, thereby making it less fleeting – but, still true nontheless…

Can…not…wait! :):) So many exciting projects!! And two more solo albums (assuming the holiday album is solo), those sound really exciting. Especially one based purely on improv in various locales, that’s such a great concept :)

Would I be right in assuming that you won’t be continuing in following, then, the somewhat-established pattern of solo album – dance album – LN album?

Feel free to check for interesting reverb anywhere in the Phoenix area : )

Matt brings up a good point, actually–do you have any plans yet to stay in or leave the desert for this? That’s a big factor in the atmosphere! :)

One sound I so wish I could hear once more. The sound of the wind above when we went to the storm cellar, a cave outside our home with our flickering kerosene lantern and were safe together as a family wondering. Some sounds and smells are like no others.

Not sure how far you are willing to go to find a location such as a chapel but I know of one in San Antonio. An artist by the name of Tish Hinojosa recorded a CD-Dreaming from the Labrinth in a 170-year old former convent chapel in San Antonio next to the Southwest Craft Center. She writes that “the thick walls of pounded earth and stone that surround this building and others around it juxtapose what is now San Antonio’s Downtown River District”. The chapel and other convent buildings have become the Southwest Craft Center where the folk arts are preserved through displays. Additionally, artists of many disciplines are encouraged to develop new projects and experiment in this creative sanctuary. The CD is one of her best and one that poetic mysticism.

May I suggest the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, in Methuen, Massachusetts. This is a building that was constructed to house a gargantuan pipe organ that belonged to the Boston Symphony. Decca and other high end classical labels rent it often to record chamber music. The size is perfect for chamber ensembles, and the reflections are very good. I did a voice recital there a while ago and let me tell you, the sound is breath taking. You may visit them on the web at http://www.mmmh.org.

    Thrilling ideas.
Good to hear that you are working on another “blue” album. The concept sounds great. It’s working on you for some time already, isn’t it?
The title “Tears in rain” fits brilliantly to this of your directions. I like it. So many moments, feelings, experiences and stories get lost each day without us noticing it. Some time, we should capture some. To give them a memory. Respect. That life wasn’t useless.

Just today I ran across a story called “Tears in the Snow” What a completely opposite feeling. freeze them, hold onto them. So many real, meaningful moments that touch us the deepest are so fleeting….tears in the rain

Your mention of spaces and music reminded of an album that once had me mesmerized into a trance, Paul Horn in the Taj Mahal…he played against the echoes…transfixing! LOL I can’t even imagine the state your space-music will put me in…probably should listen to it reclined in something soft…:-)
Thanks Tito and Dave for the links…that diary looks facinating and that Organ looks stupendous, one can only imagine what the sound must be like!
